Announcements:

  • There’s been a change to the Class Dojo Rewards. Please check the 5 and 10 point rewards to note the change.
  • There’s been a lot of questions regarding the “Research Extra Credit” grade in Focus. As discussed in class, each quarter this category will appear. Periodically in class, we come up with questions we cannot stop and answer in the moment, but that are valid questions worth our attention. When Ms. Barker deems an question worthy, she will announce it to all classes and via the blog. The first student to email her (email because it date/time stamps) the correct answer they have researched will earn extra credit in the “Research Extra Credit” assignment. The latest opportunity has been fulfilled. Congratulations to the 8B student who got the answer in first! I’ll be reaching out to notify you that you earned the point. At this time, there are no research extra credit opportunities, but it is a good idea to check the blog for when they are announced.
  • Make-Up Monday sign-up sheets are posted outside our classroom door for the entire second quarter. If you plan to attend, remember you must sign-up to reserve your spot. The sign-up sheets will be taken down each Friday afternoon. If there’s no interest (assessed by no students signing up,) there will be no Make-Up Monday the following week.

  • For today’s bell ringer, please reference the power point. It’s important to keep your comp. book updated and accurate in the event of periodic comp. book checks. If absent, please borrow Ms. Barker’s comp. book to the get the information. Your post-it is in the absence folder.
  • The teacher guided students through how to complete the Cornell Notes for the second read of “Life at Home in the 21st Century” (Collections textbook.) For your reference, it is outlined in today’s power point.
  • Students were able to finish answering the third question with a partner, or on their own.
  • Next, students generated 1-2 more questions and in a similar fashion recorded the questions on their Cornell Notes and answered them using at least two pieces of evidence from the text to connect it back to their answer/conclusion they drew from the text. If the question cannot be answered through re-reading the text, it is not a question that should be added to the Cornell Notes.
  • Once finished, students need to summarize the central ideas of the text on the back of their Cornell Notes, in the space provided. Since these summaries are limited to five lines, it’s advisable to get to the point and avoid unnecessary language such as: When asked to summarize “Life at Home in the 21st Century” it could be said that the central ideas for this text are…
  • When finished, students worked their way through the work period checklist (available in today’s power point.) If students were unable to get started on this week’s assigned article, they may work on it at home in addition to time offered in class.

  • Bring your Collections textbook (hard cover) next class until told otherwise.
  • Complete two weekly A3K choice articles between midnight on Monday – 11:59 P.M. on Sunday, scoring 75% or higher on each article to earn credit. Students wrote down their independent answers to questions 7-10 of their worksheet and re-worked any of last class’ answers before worksheets were collected again at the end of class.
  • When finished, students worked their way through the work period checklist (available in today’s power point.)

  • Regarding the differentiated activities during today’s work period:
    • Students who were absent the date it was due, need to complete the assignment and turn it in to the class inbox.
    • Students who were absent the date it was due, but have already submitted it although not gotten it back with feedback, can move on to early finisher work. They will have an adjusted schedule for their alternate opportunities, if they do not master it with this practice.
    • Students who earned a “check plus” have satisfied the requirement for the assignment and do not need further practice.
    • Students who earned a “check” may re-do the assignment on a separate piece of paper, staple it to the first, and re-submit for a second chance.
    • Students who earned a “check minus” need to complete the Level Up Tutorial on Theme and complete an article analysis sheet for the practice questions. Here are generic directions for how-to access the Level Up Tutorials. Category: Analyzing Literature. Topic: Theme.
    • All opportunities are due at the end of class today.

  • Classes had differentiated methods for receiving their essay feedback and completed the Initial Writing Review worksheet to guide them through their reflection, before learning their scores.
  • When finished, students worked their way through the work period checklist (slide/page 8 in today’s power point.)
  • The teacher had conferences with students on an as-needed basis.
  • Students got back their Theme short response (last page in the Close Reader for “He-y, Come on Ou-t!” and were given directions for further practice (slide/page 4 in today’s power point.) Students who earned a “check plus” have satisfied the requirement for the assignment and do not need further practice. Students who earned a “check” may re-do the assignment on a separate piece of paper, staple it to the first, and re-submit for a second chance.   • The class added the “mood/tone cheat sheet” into their comp. books. If absent, your copy is available in the absent folder for your class. and practiced assessing tone using the teenager and the businessman in the State Farm car commercial.
  • We refreshed our memories of the reading, “Always Wanting More” by answering the questions: 1) according to the author, what accounts for the attitude of modern consumers toward the consumption of goods and 2) what is the goal of the modern superstore?
  • After reviewing our answers, the teacher looked over the “Always Wanting More” Analyzing the Text worksheet with students to ensure they knew how to complete the five tasks.
  • Students had the remainder of the work period to finish the tasks outlined in today’s power point. This included the worksheet and the assigned Achieve 3000: “Milky Ways in the Making” (both were due today.)

We paused periodically to discuss and ensure we understood what was being read, add difficult/unfamiliar words to our personal vocabulary dictionaries and trace the central ideas of the text.
  • Ultimately we answered the questions: 1) What keeps people in our consumer society always wanting more? 2) When is having more enough? in preparation for next class’ more thorough analysis of the text.

  • Today students completed a Universal Theme Bell Ringer and added it to their comp. books after the class reviewed the answers.
  • Students who were absent last class, received their Close Reader. Students who did not remember to bring their Close Reader had a packet of the text in which they could write.
  • The class picked up where we left off last time and discussed interpretations to the end of the short story. To see an overview of our class discussion points, please view the “He–y, Come on Ou–t!” Analysis Tasks. All classes completed Analysis Tasks #1 and #2. We answered some questions through adding a “Hey, Come on Out” Analysis Chart to our comp. books. Please reference Ms. Barker’s comp. book, if absent, to ensure your comp. book is up-to-date and accurate. Only 5B completed Analysis Task #3.

Homework:

  • Bring your Collections textbook (hard cover) next class.
